Let’s Talk: End of Life Planning

Talking about end-of-life planning isn’t always easy, but it is one of the most empowering conversations we can have.

Let’s Talk: End of Life Planning – Knowledge is Power is the fifth event in the Let’s Talk series, organised by Sabine Muschter in collaboration with Byron Community Centre and HeyDay Supports. This community information session invites people to learn more about planning ahead, understanding personal affairs documents and navigating support at the end of life.

Why this conversation matters

With over 25 years’ experience in intensive care nursing, Sabine Muschter has seen first-hand how the absence of early conversations and clear documentation can place unnecessary strain on individuals and families during times of serious illness or dying. When important decisions are left unspoken or undocumented, loved ones are often left to make choices under pressure and uncertainty.

This session is inspired by Sabine’s passion for encouraging meaningful conversations about end-of-life planning and empowering people with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions while they still have choice and clarity.

Expert speakers, practical guidance

The evening brings together experienced speakers across health, legal and aged care, each offering clear, practical insights.

Zenith Virago, EO and Founder of the Natural Death Care Centre, is a Death-walker, Ceremonialist and Para-Legal who supports individuals and families to navigate end-of-life matters with care and clarity. Zenith will explain key legal and practical considerations in accessible language, including Advance Health Directives, Enduring Guardianships, Power of Attorney and Wills, and why these documents are essential for everyone. She will also provide a brief overview of Voluntary Assisted Dying, helping people understand their options so they can make informed decisions at the right time.

Sue McGuigan, Occupational Therapist and Aged Care Assessment Clinical Lead for NSW Health on the Far North Coast, will guide attendees through navigating My Aged Care and connecting with aged care services. Sue will also explain ‘Support at Home’ and end-of-life care pathways, drawing on her extensive experience across rural and metropolitan NSW and Queensland.

Peter Devine, CEO of HeyDay Supports, will speak about the aged care journey and how to access local support when care needs begin, whether suddenly or gradually. HeyDay Supports has delivered community-based aged, disability and dementia care across the Byron, Ballina, Tweed and Lismore shires for over 30 years, with day respite at the heart of its services.

Connecting with local support

Following the discussion, attendees will have the opportunity to meet with the speakers and connect with local care providers and services. Information tables will be available, offering further resources and guidance for those wanting to explore their options in more detail.

This is an important conversation for anyone seeking clarity, confidence and peace of mind around end-of-life planning - for themselves, their families or those they care for.
