International Women’s Day, Cultural Connection and Community Care

9th – 13th March 2026

From an uplifting Women’s Space celebration to important domestic violence training and a heartfelt community memorial, it has been a meaningful week at Fletcher Street Cottage.

Highlights

  • Women’s Space celebrated International Women’s Day with a special gathering where women came together for an afternoon of connection and relaxation. The event included live music, laughter, pampering, head and shoulder massages, an onsite clothing op shop and a creative art space. It was a joyful and inclusive environment that supported wellbeing and community connection.
  • This year so far, Fletcher Street Cottage has welcomed 125 visits from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and 75 visits from people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. These figures highlight the multicultural nature of our space, where people from many cultures come together in a safe and respectful environment.
  • On Thursday we welcomed Women’s Health Northern Rivers for a valuable training session on responding to non-fatal strangulation, referral pathways and best practice support. This training strengthens our ability to respond safely and effectively to people experiencing domestic and family violence.
  • One participant shared that attending Art Space helped boost his confidence. Although he had always wanted to try creating art, he had never felt encouraged to do so before. Fletcher Street Cottage’s Art Space provides a supportive environment where people can explore creativity, build confidence and connect with others.
  • A big thank you to Kelly from Underwear for Humanity, who donated more than 100 items of underwear for men and women. Donations like this make a practical difference for people experiencing hardship and help us provide dignity and comfort.
  • On Friday, our community gathered to hold a memorial for a former participant who recently passed away. Family members and community friends came together to honour their life, share memories and celebrate the connection they brought to those around them.
