Council Supports Courtyard Safety and Accessibility Upgrade

We have completed an important safety and accessibility upgrade to our central courtyard at the Byron Community Centre and Theatre, supported by Byron Shire Council through the 2025 Community Initiatives Program.

The project included the installation of a new handrail and upper-level safety barrier, improving access and safety for the many community members who use the space each week.

Located at the heart of the Byron Community Centre precinct, the courtyard is a shared gathering place connecting Byron Theatre, Byron Spaces, Byron Seniors and a wide range of community programs and events. The upgrade delivers immediate benefits for older community members, people with mobility challenges and visitors navigating the multi-level site.

While Byron Community Centre’s long-term vision remains a fully levelled and universally accessible courtyard, this project represents an important step forward in improving the safety, accessibility and functionality of the existing space.

Byron Community Centre General Manager Michelle Heuer said physical infrastructure plays a vital role in creating inclusive community spaces.

“Inclusion is not only shaped by programs and services, but also by how accessible and welcoming our shared spaces are for the people using them every day,” Michelle said. “We’re grateful to Byron Shire Council for supporting this practical improvement, which will help make the centre safer and more accessible for our community.”

The project was supported through Byron Shire Council’s Community Initiatives Program, which assists local projects that strengthen community wellbeing, participation and accessibility across the Shire.
