Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan
Steeped in tradition yet exuding innovation, Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan, a true maestro of the sitar, promises an evening that transcends boundaries, transporting all listeners to a realm of profound musical expression. With his delicate touch and virtuosic command over the sitar, he effortlessly weaves intricate melodies, creating a tapestry of emotions that captures the hearts of all who listen.
Ustadji’s father gave him a toy sitar when he was just 1.5 years old. By three, Ustadji was sitting on his grandfather’s lap, learning vocal music. Thus, beginning a lifetime of rigorous practice and profound love for the music that would define his life and enrich that of his listeners’. Drawing from the depths of his vast knowledge and years of rigorous training, Ustadji showcases the brilliance of his lineage and the profound artistry passed down through generations, each time he performs.He gave his first nationwide performance on All India Radio in 1972, earning the distinction of “Top Grade Artist” in 1999. His dedication to producing vocal music on the sitar has gone far beyond imitation, and his instrument is famously called the “Singing Sitar.” He was first named “Ustad” by none other than musical legends Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Zakir Husain, and Pt. Jasraj, all world-class masters themselves.
Recognized by music aficionados as one of the world’s finest sitar players today. He is considered the current doyen of the Etawah Gharana, and has been awarded such prestigious honors as the Sangeet Natak Academy Award (2006), the Padma Shri (2012) and the Kalajyoti Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
He has performed in all major musical festivals in India and abroad and with and with many notable Indian classical musicians including Grammy-winning percussionist, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Grammy-winning slide guitarist, Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Pt. Kumar Bose, Pt. Ronu Majumdar, enthralling the audience everywhere.
Sri Anubrata Chatterjee
An outstanding tabla player from the Farukhabad Gharana, Anubrata is the son of the great tabla maestro Pandit Anindo Chatterjee. With his dexterity, grace, and unmatched tonal quality, Anubrata has not only taken his father’s legacy forward but also developed his own identity. Through his understanding of Tabla and his faultless performances, Anubrata has successfully established himself as a solo performer and an accompanying artist. His countless and some of the most memorable performances with his father, and guru Pandit Anindo Chatterjee have mesmerized audiences. Anubrata is an artist who has great depth from his deeply ingrained traditional style of tabla style and is also keenly interested in contemporary projects that appeal to the younger generation. His collaborations with various fusion bands have given him numerous opportunities to share the stage with well-known artists like Shankar Mahadevan, Ranjit Barot, Rahim al Haj, the famous oud player from Iraq, and many more.
Anubrata has accompanied all the legendary classical musicians from India, including Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Pandit Birju Maharaj and many eminent musicians and artists from all over the world.A solo concert at BBC World Radio, UK, in 1991 set the global stage for Anubrata; since then, he has performed worldwide. From The Kennedy Centre of Performing Arts, Washington DC, to Carnegie Hall, New York, from The Wigmore Hall, London, to The Esplanade Theatre, Singapore, Anubrata has performed at many prestigious venues and music festivals. He has presented several concerts and shared the stage with numerous eminent artists in performances within India and other countries, including the USA, UK, France, Switzerland, Japan, Jordan, Greece, and many more. He has also performed with France’s National Symphony Orchestra and collaborated with other international musicians. Anubrata is actively involved in training young musicians and conducts regular workshops in New York at Music Academy for Tabla Research by Pandit Anindo Chatterjee (MATRA). He has also conducted multiple workshops in Japan and guides students in advanced learning. Anubrata has won several awards and accolades, among these, The President’s Gold Medal (2001) awarded by All India Radio, Pandit Nikhil Ghosh Memorial Award (2002), Pandit Basavaraj Rajguru Memorial National Award by Karnataka Government (2014), and Sangeet Natak Akademi ‘Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar’ (2016), are particularly significant.
