Volunteer Spirit, Housing Success and Sector Collaboration

2nd – 6th March 2026

This week at Fletcher Street Cottage we’ve been celebrating the generosity of our volunteers, strengthening collaboration across the sector and hearing powerful stories of progress from people we support. Here’s a snapshot of what happened.

Highlights

  • On Tuesday morning, volunteers Gorgie, Will and Liz from Byron Bay Sotheby's International Realty joined us to help serve breakfast. Will shared that he chose to volunteer at Fletcher Street Cottage because his mother once volunteered here, and he remembers how meaningful the service was to the community.
  • On Wednesday, volunteers from the Commonwealth Bank stepped in to support breakfast service. Volunteers play an essential role in our work, allowing the community to take pride in caring for one another.
  • A big thank you to Amrita and her volunteers from Amrita's Pantry, who continue to generously dedicate their time and resources to preparing and serving breakfast at Fletcher Street Cottage. Their contribution helps ensure everyone starts the day with a warm meal and friendly connection.
  • Staff joined other organisations across the sector for the Ending Rough Sleeping Collaboration Byron Shire event, where service providers came together to share strategies and solutions aimed at reducing homelessness across the region.
  • We were touched to hear from a former service user who reached out to share that he has now found a place to live. He reflected that Fletcher Street Cottage was a meaningful space for him during a difficult time and that the support he received gave him hope and the motivation to move forward.
  • On Thursday, members of our team attended the By Name List coordination meeting, where stakeholders collaborate to identify solutions and coordinate support for people experiencing homelessness in the Byron Shire.
