Hula Brings Healing, Joy and Movement to Byron’s Senior Community

There’s a quiet kind of magic happening at Byron Theatre on Monday mornings.  It doesn’t involve stages or spotlights, but it does involve rhythm, connection and a whole lot of heart.  Hawaiian Hula Dance Classes, offered free to local seniors as part of the Byron Seniors Club, are proving to be one of the most uplifting additions to the Centre’s growing list of community programs.

After a six-week pilot in March and April, the response was so overwhelmingly positive that a second term has already been confirmed.  The next round of classes will begin in early June, running for eight weeks through to the end of July.

Described by many participants as both healing and transformative, hula offers more than just gentle movement. As one participant, Jude shared:

“The classes are great for mind, body and soul.  For increased grace, suppleness, balance and expressiveness.”

Another participant, Paula compared the experience to meditation, while Marguerita said it brought her:

“Peace of mind overriding mundane stresses.”

The classes are led by Lilith from Byron Bay Hula/Mana Aloha, whose warm and grounded approach has drawn praise from her students, says Avriil:

“The teacher is beautiful and calming and I love the way she teaches.  Being Indigenous, these classes are very spiritual to me.”

Hula, often described as the dance of aloha, weaves music, movement and storytelling into a soulful form of self-expression. For seniors looking to stay active, connected and inspired, it’s proven to be an ideal outlet.  Says attendee Shamana:

“I love the social connection and the physical enjoyment.  It’s uplifting just to be there.”

The Byron Seniors Club, an initiative of the Byron Community Centre, continues to grow in popularity for exactly this reason, its focus on creating inclusive, joyful spaces for wellbeing and connection.  Club membership is free and open to all seniors, offering access to a dynamic schedule of weekly classes and social events.

Comments Shanti Des Fours, the Byron Seniors Program Coordinator:

“We are so proud to deliver the Byron Seniors Club, offering activities that support and celebrate our senior community.  With a focus on creativity, wellness and connection, these offerings reflect our deep appreciation and care for our community’s elders.”

The next hula term will run on select Mondays from 2nd June to 28th July 2025 from 10:30am - 12:00pm at Byron Theatre.  The classes are free for Byron Seniors Club members, and walk-ins are welcome.  Those interested can register for the course or join the Club by visiting www.byronseniorsclub.com.au.

Whether it’s for fitness, friendship of a little inner sunshine, this is one dance floor where everyone feels welcome and embraced!
