At the Byron Seniors Club, something quietly beautiful has been taking shape on Monday mornings. The gentle swaying of hips, flowing hands telling ancient stories and the kind of connection that only comes from moving together in joy.
Since launching earlier this year, the Seniors Hula Dance course has become one of the most beloved offerings at the recently relaunched Byron Seniors Club, creating a space where members feel uplifted, grounded and connected. Not only to each other, but to something deeper.
“I love the social connecting and the physical enjoyment,” shared participant Shamana. For many, it was the first time exploring structured movement in years, and the experience quickly became much more than a dance class. “It’s great for my brain and helps me focus with other things. It’s like meditation,” said Paula.
Led by Lilith of the Byron Bay Hula / Mana Aloha troupe, the course honours hula’s rich Hawaiian roots, with a strong emphasis on storytelling, mindfulness and movement as a form of healing. The calm, inclusive teaching style and spirit of aloha fostered within the group have resonated strongly. “The classes are great for mind, body and soul – for increased grace, suppleness, balance and expressiveness,” said Jude. And for Avriil, the experience has carried personal meaning: “Being Indigenous, these classes are very spiritual to me. The teacher is beautiful and calming, and I love the way she teaches.”
The transformation they witnessed moved even the troupe members guiding the sessions. “I enjoy seeing women get into their bodies and into the spirit, and watching that become more natural to them week by week,” said Leander. “I love the way the students drop into the hula energetic of beauty and aloha,” added Delia.
While the course was initially planned as a six-week offering, the group’s shared love for the practice saw extra sessions added. The dance continues, quite literally, into a second term.
The Byron Seniors Club is a free initiative of the Byron Community Centre, offering a welcoming space for local seniors to connect, move and create. With activities like hula, drumming, drama and yoga, the program is all about staying vibrant and curious at every stage of life.
If you’re ready to discover something new — or reconnect with the joy of movement — we’d love to welcome you.
