Creating Space: Fletcher Street Cottage Offers Dedicated Women-Only Support Afternoon in Byron Bay

In the heart of Byron Bay, a quiet yet powerful initiative is providing support to some of the region’s most vulnerable women.

Each week, Fletcher Street Cottage opens its doors exclusively to women who are navigating homelessness, domestic and family violence or financial instability.  Known as the Women’s Afternoon, the service is part of the broader Women’s Space program, which offers practical help, emotional support and a sense of dignity to those who need it most.

Held every week between 1pm - 3pm (after the Cottage’s general service closes at midday), the Women’s Afternoon provides a safe, welcoming environment where women can access specialist care, connect with others and find some much-needed respite.

The afternoon includes a calming art session led by Community Support worker Jennifer Abed, with all materials provided, alongside a warm afternoon tea. But the offering goes far deeper than comfort, it is a lifeline. Attendees can access showers, laundry, meals and private casework support, alongside professional services such as:

  • Housing support and tenancy assistance
  • Legal advice and outreach
  • Trauma-informed mental health counselling
  • Financial counselling and emergency aid
  • Domestic violence casework

Assistant Manager and Community Support Worker, Maddie Powell, says the program addresses an urgent need in the community.

“We’re seeing more women arriving overwhelmed, isolated and unsure where to go. Many are fleeing violence, dealing with crisis situations or living without access to basic essentials.  This space gives them safety, a sense of community and a pathway forward.”

And it's already making a difference.

One young mother, homeless and recovering from surgery, arrived with no support and a child who had stopped attending school.  With help from the team, she secured a $1,000 emergency grant, access to medical support and began rebuilding her life.  Within weeks, she returned to Fletcher Street Cottage smiling.  Her child back in school, their car repaired and stable housing is in sight.

Another woman, homeless for four years and recently cut off from Centrelink, was gently supported back into the system, fed and connected to temporary accommodation. Maddie continues:

“Even small wins, like a hot meal or a safe night’s sleep, can be a turning point".

The Women’s Afternoon is discreetly managed to ensure the safety of clients, with a specific day of the week shared only with women who wish to attend.

While partially funded by the James Fizelle Charitable Foundation and Lennox Head Lions Club, the program relies on ongoing community support to continue.  It operates under the umbrella of the Byron Community centre, which is marking 130 years of community service in 2025.
