A Light in the Storm: Community Spirit During Cyclone Alfred

Sometimes, the most meaningful moments happen in the most challenging times. Cyclone Alfred brought the elements but amidst the storm we saw something truly remarkable – our community stepping up for one another.

Service Users: Strength in Unity

As the winds howled and the rain lashed, the camaraderie among our service users at Fletcher Street Cottage was both inspiring and humbling. People looked out for each other, checking in to make sure their friends knew the cyclone was coming, had a plan in place and were safe from the elements. They offered a helping hand, shared knowledge and stood together in solidarity.

This simple yet powerful display of humanity is what community is all about. To our service users – we see you, we appreciate you and we are moved by the way you supported each other through the storm. Thank you for shining your light in the darkness.

A Shout Out to Our Donors

As dark ominous clouds swirled over the bay, a different kind of light shone brightly – the unwavering generosity of our donors. Individuals, businesses and philanthropists reached out to check on us, asked what we needed and offered help before Cyclone Alfred was predicted to make landfall, including donations from Red Cross and Order of Malta.

At Fletcher Street Cottage we are proud of the work we do to support people facing tough times but we couldn’t do it without you. Your kindness, generosity and willingness to step up make the world a better place. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Community Services: Collaboration in Action

A huge shout out to the incredible local, regional and state NGOs and government agencies who worked tirelessly before and during the cyclone event. The coordination and teamwork ensured that the most vulnerable members of our community were safer and better supported.

At Fletcher Street Cottage we are especially grateful for the direct and indirect support given to our rough sleepers. Your responsiveness to advocacy and assistance requests made a tangible difference. We look forward to continuing this vital collaboration in post-cyclone discussions, ensuring that we keep learning, improving and strengthening our support networks.

Moving Forward Together

Cyclone Alfred reminded us that even in the face of nature’s unpredictability, the strength of Byron's community spirit is strong. Whether it was service users looking out for one another, donors stepping up to help or service networks working in unison, the response was a testament to the power of kindness and solidarity.

To everyone who played a part – thank you. Your generosity, compassion and resilience continue to inspire us every day.
