Be Waste Wise @ Byron Community Markets

Helping Byron Community Markets move towards a zero waste future

2026

At Byron Community Markets, Waste Wise reflects a shared commitment to reducing waste and minimising our impact on the local environment. In line with waste reduction initiatives introduced by Byron Shire Council, the program supports our goal of working towards zero waste to landfill over time. By prioritising reuse, reducing unnecessary waste and making sorting simple, we are helping protect the place, culture and community that make our markets special.

Understanding the impact of everyday waste

Why Being Waste Wise matters at the markets

Markets generate a large volume of food and drink waste in a short period of time. Without a reuse system, plates, cups and cutlery would be thrown away after a single use, creating significant amounts of unnecessary waste over the course of each market day.

Being Waste Wise matters because it replaces that single use cycle with reuse. By serving food and drinks in reusable items and returning them through wash stations, the markets dramatically reduce the amount of material sent to landfill. Each item washed and reused avoids another disposable item being produced, transported and discarded.

Over time, this approach makes a meaningful difference. It allows Byron Community Markets to host large crowds while producing far less waste, reducing environmental impact and supporting a more sustainable way of enjoying food at the markets.

A simple system used across our market

How Being Waste Wise Works

When you purchase food or drinks at Byron Community Markets, stallholders serve them using reusable plates, cups and cutlery wherever possible. These items replace disposable packaging and are designed to be used again and again throughout the day.

After eating or drinking, reusable items are returned to clearly marked wash stations located around the markets. From there, items are collected and cleaned using commercial washing and sanitising processes that meet food safety standards, before being returned to circulation.

This closed loop system allows large numbers of people to enjoy the markets while generating far less waste. By keeping reusable items in use rather than throwing them away after a single meal, the markets reduce landfill, cut down on resource use, and maintain a clean, welcoming environment for everyone.

Small actions that make a big difference

What You Can Do

Enjoy your food and drinks at Byron Community Markets just as you always have. Our stallholders use reusable plates, cups and cutlery wherever possible, so there is nothing extra for you to organise or remember while you are soaking up the atmosphere.

When you are finished, simply drop those items off at one of the clearly marked wash stations around the markets. They are easy to spot and are there so everything can be cleaned properly and ready to be used again.

That small moment makes a real difference. Returning reusables helps keep the whole system flowing smoothly and reduces the need for throwaway items. And if you are ever unsure, market staff and volunteers are nearby and happy to point you in the right direction.

Where to Find It

Wash stations and return points are located throughout Byron Community Markets, close to food stalls and seating areas. They are clearly marked and easy to recognise as you move through the markets.

You will usually find wash stations near food zones, places to sit and along main walkways, making it simple to return reusable plates, cups and cutlery during your visit. Clear signage helps guide you, so you are not left guessing where to go.

Staff and volunteers are nearby if you need a hand. The system is designed to fit naturally into the market experience, keeping everything flowing smoothly while reusable items move back into circulation.
