Woolworths Donates Food Vouchers to Fletcher Street Cottage

Woolworths, one of Australia's leading supermarkets, has recently donated $100 worth of food vouchers to Fletcher Street Cottage, our homeless hub in Byron Bay. The donation is part of Woolworths' ongoing commitment to support local communities and address food insecurity.

Fletcher Street Cottage is a community-led initiative that provides meals and support services to homeless individuals and families in the Byron Shire. We rely heavily on donations from individuals and organisations to keep our doors open and continue our vital work.

Empowering People to Make Food Choices

The food vouchers donated by Woolworths will go a long way in helping to feed those in need at Fletcher Street Cottage. The vouchers can be used to purchase a range of essential items such as fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, bread and meat. This donation will not only help to provide much-needed nourishment to those experiencing homelessness but also empower them to make their own food choices.

Food is a basic need and there are multiple factors that influence food insecurity including the rising cost of living. We offer breakfast every weekday from 7am to 9am with a changing seasonal menu. Liberation Larder provides lunch at the Byron Community Centre on Mondays and Thursdays.

Tackling Food Insecurity

Woolworths has a long history of supporting local communities and addressing food insecurity in Australia. In 2020 alone, the supermarket donated over $40 million worth of food to various charities and community organisations. Through its partnerships with organisations like Foodbank and OzHarvest, Woolworths has also helped to rescue over 5,000 tonnes of surplus food that would have otherwise gone to waste.

In addition to its food donations, Woolworths has also implemented several initiatives to reduce food waste and promote sustainability. These include a 'zero waste' program that aims to send no food to landfill by 2025, and a program that encourages customers to bring their own reusable bags and containers to reduce plastic waste.

The donation to Fletcher Street Cottage is a testament to Woolworths' commitment to creating positive change in the communities it serves. By supporting local initiatives like Fletcher Street Cottage, Woolworths is helping to address food insecurity and support those in need. This donation is a small but important step towards creating a more equitable and sustainable future for all Australians.
