Shakespeare's Classic Tragedy Othello Returns To The Stage
A timeless tale of jealousy, deceit and revenge, Othello by William Shakespeare is making a return to the stage. The acclaimed play, widely regarded as one of Shakespeare's greatest works, will be performed at the Byron Theatre on Saturday March 4th, 2023.
Directed by the talented Paul Kininmonth, this production promises to be a captivating present day spin of the story of Othello, on the back streets of a neighbourhood entrenched in gang violence and his tragic descent into madness. But even as the threat of conflict subsides, and Othello and Desdemona endeavour to make their new life, Othello’s trusted henchman (Iago) begins his dark scheme of revenge.
Othello is a tragedy of shadows, those seduced by the dark become darkness itself. It’s this eternal play of light and shadow that drew Paul Kininmonth to direct The Tragedy of Othello, his sixth production of Shakespeare. Paul also identifies with the fallen General.
“Although Othello is the perpetual outsider, he’s also better qualified – stronger, more brave, more experienced – than the Venice locals. So, invariably, the shadow of jealousy stirs early in the play. And tragically Othello’s the man most susceptible to its powers.”
