The Feather Lady

Meet the Stallholder is a series on the makers and creators at Byron and Lennox Markets, what makes them passionate about their products, and how to make a micro business a success.

Hi Miranda!

Tell us about The Feather Lady.

The Feather Lady story began 25 years ago when I was living in my van and making dreamcatchers for a living. I was on my way from Cairns to Tasmania but I thought I’d stop in Byron Bay to do the market.

Unfortunately, or as it turned out fortunately, as I drove in to claim my first ever market site, the engine to my van seized and my van had to be towed away. So, that’s how I came to live in Byron Bay and 25 years later I’m still here working my feather magic at the markets.

What do you love about the markets?

Over the years my stall has morphed from very traditional crafts to its current expression of The Feather Lady salon. I have always had a special connection to feathers. All of my beautiful feathery creations are 100% hand crafted and unique in design.

The art of artistically and professionally transforming women with my feather hair extensions brings me much joy. I also hand make a stunning selection of feather earrings, feather clips and hat feathers.

What is it like to be part of the markets community?

Over the years I have customers that return every holiday to bring their kids for a hair feather treat. Some of these kids are now grown up and they still come to see me.

My daughter Jasmin has been working alongside me for over a decade and is trained in all aspects of my craft and business. It’s a mother-daughter team and I’m proud to say that she does an amazing job.

How have the markets supported you?

Market life has been my foundation to create my small business and I have always felt welcomed and supported both by the management and the community. It’s such a beautiful lifestyle and I’m very grateful to be a part of it.

I absolutely love what I do and I measure my success not by how much money I make but by the quality of space I hold for my customers.
