Byron Community Centre Celebrates Recognition for Community Impact

The Byron Community Centre is delighted to announce its success in being awarded Highly Commended for Outstanding Community Organisation at the 2023 Northern Rivers Business Awards.

Louise O’Connell, General Manager, expressed her immense pride in accepting this accolade on behalf of the organisation, stating, “This award is a small token that symbolises the hard work and dedication of the entire team. It reflects our commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people we serve, particularly at Fletcher Street Cottage.”

Byron Bay Business Awards

The Byron Community Centre won the Outstanding Community Organisation award at the Byron Bay Business Awards on August 24, 2023. This achievement then propelled the organisation to become a regional finalist. With a 100-year history, the community centre responds to community needs, providing a range of arts and social programs for the benefit of all.

2023 Community Member of Byron Shire

This recognition comes after Louise O’Connell was awarded the prestigious 2023 Community Member of Byron Shire on August 1, 2023. This award recognises Louise for her work assisting Byron Shire locals at risk of homelessness, and those already sleeping rough, at Fletcher Street Cottage.

The Byron Community Centre not only operates Fletcher Street Cottage, but also runs social enterprises Byron Theatre, Byron Markets and Byron Spaces, as well as a volunteer program, all of which contribute to the social and cultural wellbeing of the community. Community services also include counselling, sponsorship of community groups and events, and the Byron Seniors program.

Kate Love, Communications Manager, adds, “We're profoundly thankful for the recognition and to our donors and partners who make our work possible. From providing essential homeless services at Fletcher Street Cottage to supporting over 500 small businesses at Byron Markets and nurturing local artists at Byron Theatre, we continue to make a positive and enduring impact."

Byron Community Centre’s tireless efforts have left an indelible mark on the local community, cementing its well-deserved standing as a recipient of this esteemed recognition.
