 Winters Discontent

Written and performed by William Zappa
Presented by Byron Theatre and Ripe Productions

William Zappa in Winters Discontent

Revealing, funny and moving, Winter's Discontent is a theatrical tour de force from one of Australia's finest actors. Best known for his award winning work with Bell Shakespeare, Sydney Theatre Company and Ensemble Theatre, William Zappa has twice received major awards for his portrayal of Thenardier, the Inn Keeper in Les Miserables, the role which inspired him to write Winters Discontent.
In this play, Robert Winter is sitting backstage in the dressing room of a run down theatre. He is on an interminable tour of a one-man show. With only his stage manager, Mo, for company, the line between reality and play acting becomes blurred as Winter struggles to believe in his life and to live up to his theatrical creed- the show must go on.
With a command of language and stage craft that is astonishing, William Zappa exposes the actors joy and despair as his hero faces his personal demons and the tragedy of his own life.
His powers of physical characterisation are amazing and mesmerizing SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
This great show, William Zappa celebrates the transformative power of theatre and its layers THE AUSTRALIAN

Gyuto Monks of Tibet 'Heart Resonance'

an unforgettable evening of deep harmonic chants with the power to cut through and heal your innermost soul. Seven tantric masters from Gyuto Monastery in Dharamsala - pure and real - hear this unique sound, see the monks in their rich silk brocade Dakini robes complete with long horns and elephant drum and, most of all, feel the impact on all your senses of this ancient and mysterious practice. Led by much loved Gen Lama Thupten Phuntsok and Gen Thupten Tsundue, both '59ers - that is, the actual monks who were in their monastery in Lhasa as it was shelled almost into oblivion by invading Chinese forces, the group is a symbol of the determination and strength of the human spirit in the face of genocidal attack. It is these monks who have brought the beauty, the spirituality and peace of Tibetan Buddhism to the west. This year's Zhambhala (Buddha of Fortune) Tour of Australia is the monks way of giving back to Australians - to encourage recovery from economic woes and bring prosperity and good fortune to all.

The evening will help raise funds for the PHOWA project which aims to treat chronic stomach disease in the Tibetan community. It leads to stomach cancer, is suffered by around 80% of the Tibetan population yet thanks to a Nobel prize winning Australian medical discovery can be cured in 7 days! As shown on ABC TV's Foreign Correspondent on June 1, the Gyuto monks are leading the charge with help from the Byron community.

The Gyuto Precious Items famous stall will be there too on the night. Come along and support this mutually beneficial event.

 Meet Bret Easton Ellis

Twenty-five years ago, New York Times bestselling author Bret Easton Ellis defined (and defied) a generation with his memorable and acclaimed debut Less Than Zero. Since then he's gone on to write another four cult classics, shocking, stunning and disturbing readers around the world with his tales of the depravity and inhumanity of modern life. In The Rules of Attraction, Glamorama, Lunar Park and, unforgettably, American Psycho, he introduced us to the world of Bret Easton Ellis: mixing absurd comedy with a bleak vision and postmodern flair. Now, in his new book Imperial Bedrooms he returns to those characters who populated his debut. Where in Less than Zero they were disaffected teenagers, now a quarter of a century on, they face an even more fraught situation: middle age. Join this legendary American writer on his first visit to Australia, as he engages in conversation with ABC Radio National Book Show host, Ramona Koval.

 Meet Kathy Lette

Kathy first achieved succés de scandale as a teenager with the novel Puberty Blues, now a major motion picture.

After several years as a singer with the Salami Sisters and a newspaper columnist in Sydney and New York (collected in the book "Hit and Ms") and as a television sitcom writer for Columbia Pictures in Los Angeles, her novels, "Puberty Blues" (1979) "Girls Night Out" (1988), "The Llama Parlour" (1991), " Foetal Attraction" (1993)," Mad Cows" (1996),"Altar Ego" (1998) "Nip'N'Tuck" (2001), "Dead Sexy" (2003) and "How To Kill Your Husband (and other handy household hints)" (2006) became international best-sellers. Kathy Lette's plays include "Grommits", "Wet Dreams", "Perfect Mismatch" and "I'm So Happy For You I Really Am." She lives in London with her husband and two children and has just finished a stint as writer in Residence at London's Savoy Hotel. Kathy says that the best thing about being a writer is that you get to work in your jammies all day, drink heavily on the job and have affairs and call it research! (although her husband says he should have the affair as it would give her a better book!) Kathy appears head to head in a conversation with ABC Radio's Simon Marnie.

A highly charged theatrical event created by NORPA
Presented by Byron Theatre and Ripe Productions

Engine - a highly charged theatrical experience
Coming to the Byron Theatre in mid-August is a highly charged theatrical experience created by NORPA and presented by Byron Theatre and Ripe Productions. This production is an all ages event with a storyline that will resonate with many. Engine is a play about young people and cars; of fixing what's broken and celebrating life. ...
Every week somewhere in Australia news headlines proclaim yet another tragedy of young lives lost in a car wreck. Communities are shocked, families torn apart, questions are asked that can not be answered. People call for changes to the laws, politicians duck for cover, fellow students set up roadside shrines and parents are left with memories.
Set a month after a crash, Engine is the story of "Grumpop" who lost a grandson and Natasha who lost a brother and how they deal with their grief and try to get on with the future. Natasha wants to remember Stevie by finishing the project car he was working on before the crash. Grumpop is a retired mechanic and he could help but he just wants to put it all behind him. Two actors play all the characters: counsellors, driving instructors, parents, ghosts and survivors. However, joining them at every performance are students from local high schools who will devise and perform key scenes. Highly theatrical, it's a funny and moving roller-coaster ride that will break your heart and mend it.

Two Weeks... just surrender

A film experience by Johnny Abegg

Join local filmmaker Johnny Abegg (On Credit) as he takes 2 weeks out & ventures into the heart of the Tasmanian Wilderness alone, to gain clarity during a period of growing confusion and unhappiness.

Armed only with a camera, a journal and the bare necessities, the decision takes Abegg on an inward journey, to a place of reflection, accountability and deep self-inquiry, within an unforgiving landscape.

Will he find what he is searching for?

An introspective documentary, Two Weeks exposes the universal questions that arise as we hurtle toward our own 'Saturn Return'; the fears, emotions and triumphs captured honestly through Abegg's experience.

Two Weeks also pairs up with the "Dirty Sweet, Heartfelt Folk" of Soloist Musician M. Jack Bee. A beautiful/unique sound not to be missed.

Sarah Blasko

returns home for extensive Spring Tour in October 2010.

Sarah Blasko is a performer of untouchable talent. Currently touring in Europe where the pan-European release of her phenomenal third album, "As Day Follows Night" has been welcomed with open arms and to serious acclaim, Sarah returns home in October for a five week tour across the nation - from Albury to Townsville and everywhere in between - including major performances at theatre venues in all capital cities.

Promising a retrospective program revisiting her whole repertoire, Blasko's live shows always deliver more. Her previous tours have seen fellow musicians Robert Forster of the Go-Betweens, Glenn Richards of Augie March and Tim Rogers join her on stage. And who could forget the startling costumes of last year's national tour?

Her inimitable music, glowing reviews from Stockholm to Paris to London and her beguiling charm and humility have also secured Sarah releases in the USA, Canada and South Africa later this year.

"A monumental release and one that offers something new with every listen ... imagine a whole world compacted into twelve songs and you're some part of the way there." **** MAVERICK, UK (March 2010)

"Wry, understated tales of redemption and disorientation ... lovely and thoughtful" **** Q MAGAZINE, UK John Aizlewood (May 2010)

"'As Day Follows Night' ...is a delight for connoisseurs of assertive pop. Majestic." **** LE METRO, France (April 2010)

Following a tour in the UK through April and May with The Temper Trap, Sarah will head to the USA in June and back to Europe for the festival season through July and August and then back to the USA for headline shows in September, before returning to Australian shores.

"As Day Follows Night" is out now through Dew Process/UMA. Sarah Blasko is the winner of the J Award, The Rolling Stone Award for Best Female and the ARIA for Best Female. All three of her albums have far surpassed platinum sales.
