Our final performance for 2013 is on Sunday 17 November at the Byron Community Centre. It is a three part performance:
- the annual Youth Concert, starting at 1pm (Tickets on the Door – Adults $10, Children FREE)
- a Steinway recital by Gerard Willems, starting at 3pm (Tickets Online & Box Office)
- a masterclass conducted by Gerard Willems, starting at 4:30pm
Our annual Youth Concert is an exciting, joyous occasion when teenage musicians get to perform in a superb venue, with pianists playing on the fine Steinway Grand Piano in front of a discerning audience. Each year the standard seems to be rising, so if you want to come to a concert that is fun, high spirited and musically excellent, come along – you will not be disappointed. This year we have several pianists (solos and duets), recorder duets and solos, a trumpet duo, plus the funky local group ‘Three Little Sisters’, aka the Brandolini sisters.
Gerard Willems AM, Associate Professor Piano Unit, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, is Australia’s pre-eminent Beethoven interpreter and one of its finest concert pianists. His love affair with the piano began in the early fifties in Holland. There, at the age of eight, he was awarded a professorial scholarship in pianoforte shortly before migrating with his family to Australia where he spent his early life in in a migrant camp south of Sydney.
As well his ARIA-winning recordings of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas, the 5 piano concertos and the ‘Diabelli Variations’, Gerard Willems’ DVD performance of Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ concerto (with Sinfonia Australis) won the International DVD Association’s Award for Music Excellence in 2005. He has also recorded a wide variety of Mozart’s works including the complete Piano Trios and an ABC Classics CD (“Reflections on Mozart”) to mark the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth in 2006.
Gerard Willems has been awarded a Centenary Medal and a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to the arts as a concert pianist, educator and mentor to young musicians.
Gerard’s program on November 17 will include:
- Bach / Kempff – Sicilienne
- Beethoven Sonata in D minor Op31 No2 “Tempest”
- Schumann Kinderszenen Op15.
- Debussy – La fille aux cheveux de lin, Clair de Lune and Feux d’Artifice
- Liszt – Petrarch Sonnet No. 104
Please note that the $30 Adult/$25 BMS Member/$10 Child ticket will allow entrance into the youth concert at 1pm.
Due to a ticketing error in set up, please note that when purchasing tickets the starting time states 3am instead of 3pm. Gerard Willem concert starts at 3pm.
