Byron Bay Protest Rally Oct 16th
Protect our Water: Stop CSG — A National Day of Action

The growing national movement to stop the spread of coal-seam gas mining
will hold a day of action in cities and towns across Australia on Sunday,
October 16.

In Byron Bay, thousands of people are expected to march from the Butler
Street Reserve (the market grounds) to Apex Park (in front of the Beach
Hotel) in a strong show of opposition to CSG, which threatens the country’s
already strained supplies of life-essential fresh water.

“The number of ordinary Australian citizens who are getting educated on the
ecological and social threats from this destructive, largely unregulated CSG
industry just keeps building,” said Anthea Amore, president of Byron Saving
Australia’s Natural Environment (Bsane).

“With our very drinking water directly threated by CSG, people quickly
understand that there has never been a bigger corporate threat to their health
and survival, and that of the Australian environment in which we all live and
are obligated to protect and sustain.”

Amroe said corresponding protests were being held in Sydney, Brisbane,
Newcastle, and multiple regional centres.

The National Day of Action would send a powerful message to state
and federal decision makers about the will of the people. The demand: a
moratorium on CSG exploration and “fracking” until a Royal Commission
brings to light the full impacts.

“Australia is at a serious crossroads in its history and CSG is a wake-up call to
many of us,” she said.

“What kind of country and society do we want to be? Are we to continue
plundering the Earth of every ‘resource’ available — making a few rich at
the expense of everyone and everything else — or will we finally look to new
forms of energy that are much less destructive and greedy?

“October 16 is really about bringing more awareness to that choice.”

The Byron event is being supported on the day by actor Tony Barry, singer
Ash Grunwald, and comedian Arj Barker, among others. Dayne “Frackman”
Pratsky also will attend.

Amore said media in attendance could expect a mass “stunt” as well.
