What We Do

The Byron Bay Community Association is a not for profit organisation that operates the Byron Community Centre. The Centre hosts a range of functions for the most needy people in Byron Bay. Over the last 31 years the Centre has played a key role in establishing many local community services.

Currently, the Community Centre houses a range of vital services; including emergency relief, a homeless drop in centre, homeless and community breakfast, a Buddhist food bank, financial counselling, budget counselling, community counselling, legal advice, tax assistance, breast cancer support group, harmony cultural group, and a No Interest Loans Scheme.

The new Community Centre complex in Jonson Street was completed in 2002 and the superb multi-purpose venue won the 2003 Dolphin Award for Best Venue. The 246- seat amphitheatre, recently renamed the Byron Theatre, has hosted a huge range of events including music, dance, theatre, art, film, school productions and also conferences – which often utilise the additional meeting rooms within the venue. (For more details see the Venue Hire pages)

The ground-floor office in the Community Centre is an exceptionally busy place! It functions as the Byron Theatre Box Office and also as the information point for the Community Services and the Fletcher Street cottage plus the Byron Markets.

For more details see the Community Services and the Markets pages.

In addition, the Centre complex is home a variety of local organisations including Bay FM radio station, Byron Community Financial Services (BCFS) and a room leased to Southern Cross University.

The Centre is entirely self-funded through income and grants but receives no ongoing funding from Federal, State or Local Governments. It is owned and managed as a not-for-profit organisation by the Byron Bay Community Association.
